Grain growth in sintered ZnO-1 mol% V_2O_5 ceramics

Grain growth of ZnO containing 1 mol% V_2O_5 was studied for sintering from 750 to 1200 ℃ in air. The results are discussed and compared with the previous studies in terms of the phenomenological kinetic grain growth expression: G~n- G_0~n = K_0t exp( - Q/RT). Compared with the data found in the literature for pure ZnO, addition of 1 mol% V_2O_5 decreased the grain growth exponent to about 1.44, as well as reducing the apparent activation energy to 76+- 7 kJ/mol. These values indicate that the addition of V_2O_5 promotes liquid-phase sintering and increased the ZnO grain. These values are also compared with those obtained for ZnO-1 mol% Bi_2O_3 ceramics.
