Ultrasonic velocity measurements have been used to characterize the microstructural evolution during annealing of cold worked titanium mod-ified 316 stainless steel. Velocity measurements with an accuracy of more than ±0.1% were made using longitudinal and shear wave probes. Varia-tion in velocity with annealing temperature and time were correlated with variations in microstructures and mechanical properties. One to one corre-spondence was observed between the velocity measurement and mechani-cal property measurement in characterizing the annealing behavior. The velocity ratio parameter (ratio between longitudinal and shear wave veloc-ities) was found to predict the onset, progress and completion of recrystallization more exactly. Using the velocity measurements made in the direc-tions parallel and perpendicular to the cold work direction, the fourth order expansion coefficients of the orientation distribution function, which repre-sents the texture in this alloy, were determined.
