Maritime Statistics: a new forum for practitioners

As any practitioner or maritime researcher knows, the reputation and reliability of quantitative studies rely totally on the integrity of the data gathered, processed and analysed. In a classic but long-forgotten text, Morgenstern berated users of economic statistics who were ignorant of the robustness of the data used to construct models and influence policy, and called for improvements in the quality and coverage of economic statistics. Some of Morgenstern's concerns have been addressed in the general economics field, where datasets have grown in terms of complexity, historical reach, breadth of coverage and accessibility, although some issues he identified, such as timeliness, may perhaps never be resolved.
