Reflecting on 40 years of Maritime Policy & Management

In this Special 40th Anniversary Issue, we are taking the opportunity to comment and reflect on the development of maritime economics over the last 40 years from those who have made a significant contribution to this journal. As well as being excellent scholars in their own right, these authors have been an inspiration to an army of researchers and practitioners in the field. Professor Alastair Couper, then at Cardiff University, was the founding editor of the original journal Maritime Studies and Management, guiding it through that emergent phase before handing over to the incorrigible Professor James McConville at the City of London Polytechnic. Both had a keen interest in seafarers and published widely on rights and labour economics, respectively. Professor Patrick Alderton, who took up a Chair at the World Maritime University in Malmo, and Professor Trevor Heaver of the University of British Columbia, have written extensively on ports and ship operations and have a continuing association with the Journal as reviewers and contributors.
