Russia's Northern Fleet confirms new Arctic islands

A Russian naval expedition has confirmed five new Arctic islands in the cove of Vize, north east of Novaya Zemlya, which divides the Barents and Kara seas. Ranging from 900m~2 to 54,500m~2, the islands were first spotted by a student analysing satellite imagery of glacier retreats for her dissertation at the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy, St Petersburg in 2016. However, they were only recently charted, once detailed hydrographic and topographic surveys had been conducted by the Northern Fleet.
