For a fire or an explosion to start, there is always one ingredient required in addition to the presence of fuel, being oxygen. Tanker ships represent a major fire and explosion hazard, because they ship large quantities of sometimes highly flammable products. To protect the cargo in the tanks, it is required to create a non-combustible atmosphere above the flammable product, this by reducing the oxygen content in the tanks. Another reason to do this can be that the chemical product can deteriorate through a reaction with oxygen and has to be transported without being exposed to ambient conditions containing oxygen.
