Quilt in 1978 at Shipyard de Kaap in Meppel, the Netherlands, the Usseldelta hopper dredger has been an outstanding workhorse in the fleet of Van der Kamp International Dredging for many years. The dredging installation was completely overhauled in Poland in 2007, including the renewal of pipelines, suction pump, valves and hopper. The pressure pump had been replaced in 2004. Both the propulsion engines and the auxiliary engine had reached the end of their lifetime and were to be replaced. Another hurdle to tackle was the crew accommodation: the Usseldelta was originally built for daytime service, but since 1999, the ship has been operating in 24/6 service. The crew accommodation was not in line with the required manning level for full continuous operation.
