On 16 August 2013, the port of Rotterdam welcomed the Mœrsk Mc-Kinney Møller, the largest ship in the world, to her first call to Europe. Named on 14 June and delivered on 2 July, this vessel is the first of 20 Triple-E vessels, 399 metres long, 59 metres wide and 73 metres high. Triple-E stands for economy of scale, energy efficiency and environmentally improved: the vessel, named after former Mærsk CEO Arnold Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, can transport 18,000 containers with lower costs and reduces CO_2 emissions by 50% per container moved, compared to industry average on the Asia-Europe trade. Maarten Tromp, managing director Mærsk Line Nederland: "It is our mission to transport goods worldwide in a reliable, sustainable and efficient way. The Triple-E vessels help us to realise this between Asia and Europe. It is great that Rotterdam has the European first of the Triple-E, which underlines the strength and the importance of the port of Rotterdam for the Netherlands and for Europe."
