In 2015 the IMO has imposed strict rules on sulphur emissions in a number of areas, named 'SECA'. Many ship owners are forced to run on low-sulphur gasoil (MGO) within these areas. Leaving the SECA area they will immediately change to much cheaper HFO. The question they need to ask: "Is my fleet ready for changing fuels while cruising?". Firstly, the two fuel types are very different. HFO needs heating to make it suitable for a diesel engine. By contrast, MGO running through a hot fuel system may drop below a viscosity causing pumps and engine parts to suffer excessive wear. Parts may jam and resulting in loss of power. Cooling fuel can prevent this problem.
