International Mine Action Standard for Addressing Underwater Explosive Ordnance

In 2013, the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) responded to inter-, national mine action community reguests for guidance on Underwater.:survey and clearance of explosive ordnance by agreeing to establish an international mine action standard.:The initiative, led,by the Geneva International Centre for Humani- tarian Demining (GICHD), resulted in the publication of a United Nations mine action standard, a GICHD best practice guide and on-the-ground assessments: of under- water explosive ordnance sites in a dozen countries throughout the globe. This paper summarizes the GICHD efforts and the diverse challenges with underwater explosive ordnanca in order to provide a broad understanding of the nature of the problems and potential solutions.
