This coastal region of North and South Carolina is a gently sloping plain, containing large riverine estuaries, sound, lagoons, and slat marshes. The most striking feature is the large, enclosed sound known as the Albemarle-Pamlicio Estuarine System, covering approxi- Imately 7530 km~2. The cost also has numerous tidal Creek estuaries ranging form 1 to 10 km in length.
