$250,000 for environmental monitoring of Maine's beaches

$254,730 has been provided to the Maine Healthy Beaches Program by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continue efforts to monitor water quality conditions at Maine beaches. This EPA funding was made available through the federal Beach Act of 2000, which requires coastal states to monitor beaches and notify the public about water quality.rnSince 2001, when the programme began, Maine has been awarded over $1.3 million towards improving water quality monitoring along coastal beaches. Because of the length of its coastline and the number of beaches in the State, Maine has received the largest amount of Beach Grant funds given out among the five coastal New England states over the past six years. With this year's funds, the amount awarded in the region will surpass $7 million.
