Hong Kong's Small House Policy. A land and marine coastline conservation disaster in the making

The focus of the southern Chinese province of Guangdong is the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) basin and delta, which drains a vast area (some 453,700 km~2) of southern China. The river is some 100 km wide at the mouth, with the Special Administrative Regions of Macau and Hong Kong flanking the western and eastern banks, respectively. To put the river in perspective, the Pearl is the second largest river in China, after the Yangtze, with an estimated flow of 9500 m~3 second.
