摘要

The second volume of Neish's four-part work on Leith shipbuilding begins with Henry Robb leaving Ramage and Ferguson to set up on his own in April 1918. Initially he specialised in repairing damaged ships, which the war had ensured were in good supply, moving on to build pontoons, barges, tugs and a large hopper dredger for India. The last-named was assembled in a dry dock, but Robb was keen to have his own slipway and other facilities, which he achieved in 1924 by taking over Hawthorn and Company's Victoria Shipyard. This was evidently not enough for him: in 1927 he took over the yard of Cran and Somerville, after its owners had gone into liquidation. The other remaining Leith yard, Ramage and Ferguson, closed in 1935, and Robb also bought this yard, conveniently situated adjacent to his own premises.
