Ferries have evolved into a vital link in the U.S. public transportation chain. As evidence, you only have to look at the recently enacted transportation bill. In it there is more than $500 million in spending authorized on publicly owned ferries and ferry terminals over the next six years. It is the most federal funding ever for building new ferries and ferry infrastructure. This is on top of an influx of private investment in new high-speed passenger-only and vehicle ferries. The popularity of ferries, which carry more than 134 million people per year nationwide, is being driven by increasing congestion along major urban highways as commuters and vacationers look for more attractive transportation alternatives.
