Streamlining production through modeling and simulation

Production planning in a shipyard can be very tedious, manually intensive and downright tricky if there are changes in the design or manufacturing process. Inevitably, there is always redundant work. Compounding the problem is that production planning normally starts when the design is nearly complete. This limits what you can actually change in the design to accommodate the production process. Dr. Gregory T. Dobson, site director, Gulf Coast Region Maritime Technology Center (GCRMTC), New Orleans, La., recently discussed two government-backed projects that focus on solving some of the problems inherent in shipyard production planning. Dobson spoke on planning and production modelling at the Delmia 2004 Worldwide User Conference North America in Troy, Mich.
