Not much more than a century ago, ocean shipping was an industry without a "carbon footprint." Then sail gave way to steam, then steam to the diesel and now "air pollution from ships has jumped to the top of the political agenda," in the words of Intertanko's Managing Director, Dr. Peter Swift. Intertanko has proposed, essentially, that the Annex VI of the MAEPOL convention should require all ships to switch to distillate fuels with a low sulfur content.
