NEW FERRIES ON THE HORIZON

It is survival of the fittest in the current economic environment-and the ferry market is no different with states battling for federal funding to fuel their ferry programs. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 provided the Federal Highway Administration's Ferry Boat Discretionary (FBD) program with $60 million for the construction and repair of ferryboats and terminals. The state projects selected to receive funding were considered to be in distressed areas facing economic hardships, where the money would go to create service and jobs in the areas that needed it most.
