Meeting the strict engine emissions requirements under IMO's Tier III standard, due to come into force in 2016, has not been easy for diesel engine manufacturers. They have had to pour millions of dollars into research to develop aftertreat-ment systems that will "knock out the NOx." However, last month, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, Copenhagen, Denmark, confirmed that its two-stroke MAN B&W 6S46MC-C8 engine will meet the IMO's strictest emission standards. To meet those emission requirements, the engine has an integrated Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system.
