GREEN SPEED

The word Hyak comes from the Chinook Jargon meaning fast. And in 1967 when the Super Class ferry M/V Hyak was first put into operation by Washington State Ferries the vessel more than lived up to its name. Its design enabled the 382 ft ferry to reach a cruising speed of 17 knots and its generators to run at full speed, powering the motors at a constant 900 rev/min. This design made perfect sense in 1967 when there was an abundance of fuel and the data regarding the effects of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions was virtually non-existent. Now, however, this design is proving to be detrimental.
