By this time next year, Vigor's Swan Island Shipyard in Portland, OR, will be home to the largest dry dock in the U.S. The 80,000 long ton, 960 ft long dry dock is under construction in China and is due to be delivered in March 2014. The dry dock will be towed in three pieces to Portland for assembly. The $40 million dry dock will provide Vigor with a critical new tool in its repair toolbox, providing it with the ability to service the next generation of Military Sealift Command dry cargo/ammunition ships, post-Panamax cargo ships and cruise liners, and Arctic oil and gas exploration vessels. According to Vigor's Rene Doiron, Vice President, Ship Repair, the new dry dock's first job will likely be to prepare one of Portland's other large dry docks for use to Seattle to improve the company's repair capacity at that yard.
