Slow steaming, fuel sulfur limits present lubrication challenges

An industrywide shift to slow steaming has put new stresses on existing marine engines originally built to operate at higher service speeds. Additionally, the introduction of new generation longer stroke, higher pressure slower turning engines has produced its own set of challenges for lubricants. Added to this, progressively tighter limits on sulfur in ships' fuel mean that existing engines are now spending significant hours operating on fuels they were not designed to burn. All of this has created significant engine lubrication challenges.
