IMO has set world shipping the goal of cutting its green house gas (GHG) emissions by at least 50% by 2050. That's a tough target and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) says it will involve a propulsion revolution as big as the switch from sail to coal firing and then from coal to oil. Already shipbuilders, engine manufacturers, classification societies and others are looking at their options.
