The potential for danger lurks around every corner of any shipyard. According to the CDC's Center for Maritime Safety and Health Studies, there are approximately 160,000 workers employed in shipyards in the United States, spread across 26 states bordering coastal and inland waters. Between 2011 and 2016, there were 45 fatal accidents (4.6 per 100,000) among shipyard workers—higher than the rate for all U.S. workers. There were an estimated 54,200 non-fatal injuries/illnesses during the same period (5,543 per 100,000), nearly seven times higher than the rate for all U.S. workers and one of the highest injury/illness rate among maritime workers.
