The Italian LPD/ro-ro/aircraft carrier concept

Since the 1980s the Italian Navy, in co-operation with warship constructors Fincantieri, have been working on the design of a major vessel which would be able to operate in amphibious, ro-ro and aircraft carrierroles. As such it would have to be capable of interacting with a broad-based international force. Such a vessel would be considerably larger than the Navy's sole carrier, the 10 000/13 850t Giuseppi Garbaldi, forwhich it would provide a more than adequate stand-in when the latter was refitting, and also provide a secondary amphibious assault capability.
