Italian naval constructors regain confidence

Fincantieri's two dedicated naval shipyards south of its Genovese headquarters, at Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, secured three naval orders in 1999 after a dearth of work in this sector for almost a decade. The facili-ties had been kept operative largely by the construction of fast commercial ferries. Firstly, Muggiano secured the order for two of a projected four diesel-electric submarines, with incorporated AIP, of the advanced German Type 212 design with amendments to meet Italian requirements. These are being constructed at a new £20M submarine facility, Italian submarines having previously been built at the Adriatic yard at Monfalcone.
