The contra-rotating propeller con-cept is often promoted as a fuel-saving, power-saving, more efficient solution for propulsion. Now ABB Marine has combined the benefits of the CRP with that of the steerable podded propulsor and revealed the CRP Azipod. The combination provides a ship with a very high degree of manoeuvrability which obviates the need for stern thrusters and rudders (while providing greater overall efficiency.
