With a gearbox of this magnitude it quickly became apparent at the planning stage that it would be impractical to remove the gearwheel as one unit. Rather, it would have to be dismantled in-situ with special attention paid to the pinions and main wheel. To visualise the procedure, the combined Babock Engineering Services/David Brown Textron project team used wooden models of the RN's aircraft carrier Illustrious' gearbox to gain an understanding of how to dismantle it, before proceeding to AutoCAD 3D modelling.
