Canadian government commits to JSS acquisition

In MID-APRIL, the Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin announced that his government was committing itself to the acquisition of a new class of Joint Support Ships (JSS) for the Canadian Navy (Maritime Command), and would acquire three examples of the vessels under a C$2.1 billion project. Shortly after the Prime Minister's announcement, on 16 April, the Department of National Defence revealed further details about the project, the main aim of which is to provide the Maritime Command with enhanced support capability for naval task groups, and enhanced sealift and support for forces deployed ashore.
