EARLY NUCLEAR TANKERS

When the US submarine Nautilus first went to sea under nuclear power on 17 January 1955, it signaled a new era in marine propulsion technology. As we now know, nuclear power has become the preferred medium for submarines and certain types of surface warships but has only achieved experimental status in the commercial shipping world. Yet just three and a half years after the Nautilus put to see a detailed design proposal for a nuclear powered tanker was put forward by a leading British shipyard.
