In the days when Britain had a major shipbuilding industry, Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness was one of its leading names and the man behind much of its post war success was Len Redshaw. A welding expert, he modernised the company and built many landmark vessels including the liner Oriana, the Methane Princess, one of the first two LNG tankers in the world, the first 100 OOOdwt tanket built in Europe, the British Admiral, and of course the nuclear submarines. This superb volume details Redshaw's long career, and is not afraid to give an honest view of the man, warts and all. But it as much the story of the Barrow yard over the decades from 1927 to 1976 that he worked at the yard, finally retiring as Deputy Chairman of Vickers Ltd.
