The impressive combination of environmental benefits and low costs has allowed LNG to emerge as the forerunner in the race to meet emission regulations. While the benefits of using the gas are being touted, there are a number of issues that are yet to be resolved ahead of a rapidly approaching deadline. This is a concern that David Balston, director safety & environment at the UK Chamber of Shipping flagged up when addressing delegates at the first IMarEST LNG Ship Fuel Technology Conference, held at the port of Antwerp in late-May. Pointing out that the accelerated pace of SOx regulation being set by the IMO may result in deadlines kicking in before the industry is prepared to meet them, he warned that this may lead to a modal shift in the carriage of goods.
