Dear editor, The articles by Keith Ray and J E Page have been interesting and useful in defining the gradual acceptance of the azimuth thruster during and after WW2 and its application to an ever wider range of vessel types. But the azimuth thruster also has a prehistory in the 19th century. My curiosity was first aroused by a wooden model displayed in the Science Museum in London, labelled as a Mallory propeller with an accession date of 1879. As the museum had no detailed information on this exhibit I decided to research the matter further.
