Commonly known for its use to soften and sweeten food, glycerine (also known as glycerol) is being evaluated for use as a marine fuel by the GLEAMS (Glycerine Fuel for Engines and Marine Sustainability) project, comprising Marine South East, Aquafuel Research, Gardline Marine Sciences, Lloyd's Register (LR) and Redwing Environmental. In addition to producing no sulphur emissions and virtually no particulate matter, glycerine can reduce NOx emissions by over a tenth compared to diesel, and produces only 0.0095kg/KWh of CO_2. On a test on a 41 Deutz turbocharged diesel engine operated at Aquafuel's premises (the IP owner of the glycerine engine technology), with a 100% power output and a continuous power rating of 42Kwe, there was just 0.41g/KWh of NOx and no CO_2 emissions when an exhaust catalyst was used. This means glycerine could easily meet all ECA emission limits when catalytic abatement is used.
