Concerns about the effects of underwater noise pollution from shipping have led to a number of initiatives to develop quieting technologies for large commercial ships. These efforts have included the development of non-mandatory technical guidelines for reducing ship noise by the IMO. For most merchant vessels the noise generated by cavitation will dominate all other sources of noise from that vessel. The noise from cavitation is broadband but with narrowband, or tonal, peaks in noise occurring at the blade passing frequency, and its harmonics.
