Mainstream media interest in shipping is rarely regarded by those in the industry as a positive experience. Usually focusing on the negatives; dramatisation, conjecture and scare-mongering, along with a spectacular lack of industry knowledge; it normally makes for uncomfortable viewing and reading forthose of us who love and work in this fine industry. So why can't we get the positives out there? Even though there is a strong argument that the mainstream media loves to only cover tragedy and disaster, shipping has an equally compelling story to tell about achievement and success; and I strongly believe it is our duty to tell it. I am not saying it is an easy thing to do; however, as a united industry showing a shared desire to change perceptions, we could start to change the way our industry is portrayed. Having so many mediums available to us to talk about what we do and how we do it, we really do have the opportunity to be heard-we just need to shout louder!
