Growing experience, both with ecdis and with unapproved electronic charting systems (ECS), serves to emphasise the vital importance of effective training. In the hands of competent, confident operators who understand the wider underlying processes and details of the actual onboard system, ecdis can deliver the promised safety dividend. But making proper use of the layered nature of the charted features is far from intuitive, while user interfaces differ considerably between manufacturers. It is already very apparent that untutored ecdis operation is fraught with danger, regardless of certificates of competency held and experience at sea.
