Inventory and the Stock Market

How does the stock market affect inventory decisions? One view, associated with Tobin (1969), is the efficient-markets view. It assumes that stock prices accurately reflect investment fundamentals—the opportunities and risks, and therefore the marginal cost of capital. The positive implication is a description of how stock price correlates with inventory: Low stock price means poor fundamentals, higher cost of capital, and lower inventory.
