Lately in the food industry there has been a lot of gloom and doom news, especially for those of us who work with the more indulgent items. Headlines warn of impending obesity lawsuits against us less-healthy segments of the industry; of states that are looking to close budget shortfalls with a "fat" tax; and predictions that 30 percent of today's children will become diabetic due to excess weight. These dire predictions have been solidified with the fact that 60 percent of the population is now classified as obese and that the number of obese children has tripled in the past 15 years. Like the proverbial glass of water, it can be considered half empty or half full. For the 52 weeks ending December 29, 2002, sales of sugarfree candy increased 20.1 percent and nutritional health bars by 16.2 percent while consumption for the confections market overall increased by just 2.4 percent. There are now over 17 million diabetics in the United States and their needs have been largely unmet. Your opportunity is to fulfill these needs. Typically the margins are higher in these specialty markets. So, while there are lots of gray clouds in the sky, the sun is still trying to peek through.
