National Influences on Multinational Corporation Control System Selection

A conceptual analysis is developed to assess the probability of a multinational corporation's selection of a subsidiary's control system under various host country environmental conditions. The effect of host country financial policies, cultural distance and political risk on the task programmability and output measurability of a subsidiary manager's actions is assessed. These antecedent conditions affect the tendency toward an input, behavior or output control system that a multinational is likely to employ for foreign subsidiaries. The host country factors are operationalized and synthesized into a three dimensional matrix that prescribes appropriate control systems.
