摘要

Some major plus points about jute are high tensile strength with good dimensional stability, moisture absorption, heat and sound insulation properties, bleachability and dyeability. High modulus fibre is suitable for making technical and industrial textiles. However, jute fibre has some inherent drawbacks reflected in its coarseness, stiffness and harshness, mesh structure with variable fibre-length, variable fineness, branching nature and low extensibility. Although some instrumental methods have been developed, the properties viz., reed length, strength, fineness, colour, lustre, defects, etc., of jute fibre are mostly assessed by hand and eye method for commercial purpose. In addition to the above properties of raw jute, evaluation of some lesser known properties e.g., ballistic work of rupture of jute reed, and flexural (bending and torsional) rigidity of fibre may also be adopted as usual practice to assess the spinning quality of fibres more precisely. Simple instruments may be introduced for quantitative evaluation of these properties.
