A Study on the Computer Aided Textile Designing (CATD) units in Andhra Pradesh

A scheme to support silk textile designers with Computer Aided Textile Designing (CATD) package was implemented during the X and XI plan periods and more than 70 units were established in Andhra Pradesh. Hence, the study of techno-economics of these units and their impact in the field becomes important. The units were working at optimum capacity and making adequate profits. The working capital requirement was quite substantial with no institutional financial support. The units made tremendous impact in the field by eradicating child labour, reducing drudgery, improving design quality, reducing design cost, creating new designs and reducing delivery time. Major constraints faced by the units were supply of cards, lack of institutional financial support, poor after sales services by machinery manufacturers and marketing.
