A process developed by the teams at Lemond Composites and Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL's) Carbon Fiber Technology Facility (CFTF) will cut production costs by more than 50 per cent relative to the lowest cost industrial grade carbon fibre. Lemond has now secured a licensing agreement from ORNL for the new carbon fibre technology. Through this agreement, Lemond Composites will become the first company to offer a new and disrupting carbon fibre to the renewable energy, transportation and many other markets. According to Lemond, this new carbon fibre has the mechanical properties of carbon fibre costing three times as much, while reducing energy consumed during production by up to 60 per cent. This new process will allow high-volume, cost-sensitive industries around the world to reap the benefits of carbon fibre composites at a fraction of the cost while incorporating chemistry geared toward recyclability.
