The December 2004 issue of EM discussed the use ofcoal gasification coupled with integrated gasification combinedcycle (IGCC) technology as an alternative method togenerate electricity. In an IGCC system, a gasifier convertscoal into synthetic gas, which is used as fuel for a gas turbineequipped with a heat recovery steam generator. Because airpollutants can be removed before the synthetic gas is fedinto the turbine, emissions from IGCC plants are typicallymuch lower than those of traditional pulverized coal plants.Furthermore, IGCC enables carbon capture and sequestrationat lower costs than traditional power plants. The integrationof coal gasification and IGCC technologies was thesubject of three articles in the December issue.
