BC University Bioenergy Project Aims to Produce Clean Energy

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is about to embark on a first-of-its-kind bioenergy project that will reduce GHG emissions equivalent to taking 1,100 cars per year off the road. This goal is just one of many UBC is hoping to reach through its Bioenergy Research and Demonstration Project, a partnership with Vancouver-based Nexterra Systems Corp. and GE Water & Power that will install a biomass gasification system at the university's Vancouver campus. The $26-million (Canadian dollars) project also aims to generate enough clean electricity to power 1,500 homes and reduce UBC's natural gas consumption by 12%. The system will also provide faculty and students with learning opportunities.
