ACLs: Finer Grained Permissions (and more !)

Tiger, OS X 10.4 is here! Apple touts a grand list of new features and improvements to our favorite OS. One option that may go un-noticed if you're not looking at Server is ACLs. 'ACL' stands for Access Control List, and is an enhanced way to specify permissions on file system objects. What you won't see on Apple's pages is that ACLs work the same in both Server and client. Back in the December MacTech, I wrote an article introducing the Unix POSIX permission system that Apple kept in place from Darwin's BSD roots. That system has been around for decades, and modern systems are fully aware of its limitations.
