Far too often, we hear finished lubricant manufacturers announcing price increases with a letter that attributes the change to "the continuing rise in base oil and additive costs." In fairness, the advisories sometimes mention increases in packaging and freight. But typically the blame is pinned on the usual suspects: base oil and additive suppliers. Although they share some common ground, it would be a mistake to think that when base oil prices go up, so do additive prices, as many of these letters imply.
