The NAO Connection

To build a PAO molecule, processors start with normal alpha olefins (NAO) and build them into longer chains. And the type of NAO feedstock used largely dicates the characteristics of the synthetic base oil, explains Frank De Rudder of Chevron Phillips Chemical International. Chemists may use decene (C_(10)), octene (C_8), dodecene (C_(12)), or even blends of these NAOs to reach the molecular weights and performance targets their customers want.
