By most accounts, U.S. base oil activity did not end 2012 with a bang, but rather more like a fizzled-out firecracker. Certainly in the waning days of the fourth quarter, the market was described as largely quiet. A number of sources emphasized that regular contractual orders were mostly on target, but a few suppliers acknowledged that some shipments carried lower volumes than were previously scheduled. Most players agreed that spot activity had become lackluster and slowed from the more active pace seen during September and October.
