This book is subtitled "The Forgotten Element of Railway History", which is most definitely true! There are many and varied books on locomotives and railway lines around the world, a good selection on carriages, wagons and rolling stock, but the subject of rope worked lines has never, to this reviewer's knowledge, been covered other than in small-scale books about specific lines. The fact that the book has been published by the Industrial Railway Society means that this work corrects that omission in comprehensive and authoritative style, at least for the UK.
